Glossary of Print Terms
Buckpress Transfer machine used to produce small samples strictly used for the heat transfer process.
CAD Strike-Off Also referred to as a paper strike-off. Generated in the Design Studio using in-house equipment.
Digital Strike-Off A method to produce a computer generated fabric strike-off of a new design without cutting screens.
Gravure Cylinder A method of printing paper through the use of an engraved copper plate.
Screen An open mesh area which has been stamped out to form a pattern.
Substrate Refers to base cloth or ground cloth for printing.
Synthetic Fabric Fabric made of man-made fibers. Examples are polyester, Avora and nylon.
T.S.O. Table strike-off generated at mill.
Wet Print/Direct Print Colors are printed directly onto the fabric in the same manner as the printing of wallpaper or newspaper. There must be one screen for each color.
Glossary of Woven Terms
Chenille A fuzzy yarn whose pile resembles a caterpillar. Used mainly for decorative fabrics, embroidery, tassels and rugs. Sometimes used broadly to define a fabric woven from chenille yarns.
Dobby Loom A type of loom on which small geometric figures can be woven in as a regular pattern. Originally this type of loom needed a “dobby boy” who sat on the top of the loom and drew up warp threads to form a pattern. Now the weaving is done entirely by machine. This loom differs from a plain loom in that it may have up to thirty-two harnesses and pattern chain. This is an expensive form of weaving.
Jacquard Intricate method of weaving invented by Joseph J.M. Jacquard in the years 1801-1804, in which a head motion at the top of the loom holds and operates a set of punched cards, according to the motif desired. The perforations in the cards, in connection with the rods and cords, regulate the raising of the stationary warp thread mechanisms. Jacquard knitting is a development of the Jacquard loom and its principles. Jacquard fabrics, simple or elaborate in design, include brocade, brocatelle, damask, neckwear, evening wear, formal attire, some shirting’s, tapestries, etc.
Pick A filing thread or yarn that runs crosswise or horizontally in woven goods. The pick interlaces with the warp to form a woven cloth. See weft.
Warp The yarns that run vertically or lengthwise in woven goods.
Weft The crossover or filling pick yarns in a woven cloth.

Bella-Dura™ is a phenomenal new fabric which encompassed three years of development and testing before being introduced into the hospitality, contract and residential markets. The goal of the Bella-Dura™ team was to create a fabric for the outdoor and indoor fabric markets that was truly exceptional to any other fabric available in the marketplace. Working together with the technical experts at American Fibers and Yarns Company, the group defined “performance” and created a new fiber blend to achieve their goal. By bundling important performance features heretofore unavailable in one fabric (in either the indoor or outdoor markets) a new category of fabric was born: Bella-Dura™.

Bella-Dura™ is a true performance fabric. By utilizing proprietary yarn technology, the solution-dyed Bella-Dura™ fabrics possess in excess of 1500 hours’ lightfastness. They are also cleanable with bleach, are inherently anti-microbial, mildew and stain resistant and exceed 50,000 double rubs for durability. Bella-Dura™ fabrics are true performance fabrics which exceed the rigorous durability requirements for Hospitality/Contract applications, and are far above the heavy-duty residential standards.

It wasn’t enough to create the most durable fabrics for the industry; the company also wanted to make the most beautiful fabrics available in the marketplace. Combining an unlimited color palette and jacquard design capability, Bella-Dura™ has created a line of beautiful fabrics that can be used outdoors, inside the home, or in commercial applications.

Bella-Dura™ is easy to care for and exceptionally easy to clean; most spills blot up with clean, dry cloth, and most stains can be removed with a mild detergent solution. Always rinse with clean water, blot with a clean, dry cloth, and allow to air dry. For more detailed cleaning instructions and information concerning our performance features and industry test compliance, please view our “Performance Features” and “Care Instruction” information below.

Beautiful. Durable. Bella-Dura™; it’s simply the perfect fabric, outdoors and in!

Bella Dura™ – Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bella Dura? Bella-Dura is a true performance fabric. By encompassing proprietary yarn technology, the solution dyed Bella-Dura fabrics possess in excess of 1500 hours lightfastness. They are also bleach cleanable, inherently anti-microbial, mildew and stain resistant, and exceptionally durable.

Will Bella Dura fabrics fade? Bella Dura fabrics are made from 100% solution dyed yarns, and meet or exceed 1500 hours lightfastness in accordance with AATCC 16, the industry standard test for lightfastness. Please reference our “Performance Features” section for other test information.

What does “solution dyed” mean? Solution dyeing means that color is added to the fibers while they are in a liquid state during the yarn manufacturing process. The color is integrated into the very fiber, which is why the fabric can be cleaned with bleach and still retain the color. Think of the analogy of a carrot and a radish; the color in the carrot is throughout, while the color on the radish lies on the outer surface. The carrot would represent a solution dyed fiber.

How do I clean Bella-Dura? A mild soap and water solution is all that is needed to remove most stains; bleach can also be used on tough stains. Always rinse with clean water and allow to air dry. Please refer to our section on “Care Instructions” for more detailed information.

Is there anything I should not use on Bella-Dura? Any cleaning product that can be used on outdoor fabrics is safe to use on Bella-Dura™, as well as bleach for tough stains. Always take great care when mixing cleaners with bleach, and work in a well ventilated area.

How should Bella-Dura fabrics be dried? Bella-Dura fabrics are woven with fibers that dry easily. Bella-Dura fabrics should always be air-dried, and never tumble-dried.

Will Bella-Dura fabrics mildew? Bella-Dura fabrics are inherently anti-microbial and will not mildew. In addition to the inherent properties, with a special additive in the proprietary Bella-Dura yarns, the growth of mildew is prevented. To achieve the best results, always keep your Bella-Dura fabrics clean.

Are Bella Dura Fabrics waterproof? Bella-Dura fabrics are not waterproof; they are water repellant. Once the Bella-Dura fabrics are cleaned, we recommend the re-treatment of the fabrics with 303 High Tech Fabric Guard™, which is available at most sporting goods and marine stores.

Are the fabrics tested for industry compliance? All fabrics are tested in our lab, and in an independent testing lab, for compliance to industry standards for durability, stain resistance and fading.

Is there a warranty with Bella-Dura? Bella-Dura™ fabrics are covered with a 3-year residential / 2-year commercial warranty for stain resistance and colorfastness to water, light and crocking (transfer of color to other fabrics) and mildew.

What is the difference between “mild soap” and “detergent”? A mild soap is one like Ivory or a liquid hand soap. Detergents are effective cleaners but because they are more harsh, they will affect the water repellant characteristics of Bella-Dura™ sooner than cleaning with a mild soap solution.

How can I purchase Bella-Dura? Currently, Bella-Dura™ can be purchased through Duralee Contract Sales Representivies.

Bella Dura™ Care Instructions

Cleaning Bella-Dura™ is easy! Bella-Dura fabrics are manufactured with inherent stain resistance that will never wear off. Because the Bella-Dura™ fabrics are made with solution dyed yarns, they can be safely cleaned with bleach. However, a mild soap and warm water solution (one part soap to ten parts lukewarm water) is all that is required for most spills.

A mild soap is one like Ivory or a liquid hand soap. Detergents are effective cleaners, but because they are harsher, they will affect the water repellant characteristics of Bella-Dura sooner than cleaning with a mild soap solution.

Apply the cleaning solution to the fabric and blot with a clean dry cloth; reapplying as necessary until the stain is gone. Some stubborn stains may require light agitation with an old toothbrush or a brush designed for cleaning upholstery. Never use stiff bristles or wire brushes, as they may damage the fabric.

Remember to always rinse with clear water to remove all soap residues, blot dry with a clean, dry cloth and allow to air dry. Soap residue actually attracts dirt, so if proper rinsing has not occurred, your fabrics will get soiled again much more quickly.

To prevent overall soil build-up, frequent vacuuming to remove dust and grime is recommended.

The cleaning chart lists common household stains and a recommended cleaning method for each stain. View the list below or click here to download a PDF of the Bella Dura™ cleaning chart.

    Flame Retardancy

    Upholstery and Bedspread Applications

Fabric used for upholstery applications usually must meet the NFPA 260A, the MVSS302 or the California Bulletin 117 Standard. Fabric is tested horizontally against these codes.

    NFPA 260A (UFAC Class I)
A cigarette test measuring the slow smoldering effect of a cigarette left for 30 minutes on a small sofa mockup. At the end of 30 minutes the cigarette is removed and the char length is measured. A char length of less than 2 inches would meet the NFPA 260A Class I. A char length exceeding 2 inches would meet the NFPA 260A Class II. Fabric that does not self-extinguish and must be extinguished, would fail the test.

California Bulletin 117 (UFAC Class II)
Test fabric at a 45 degree angle. A march or textile testing gas ignition is exposed to the fabric. When removed, the fabric must self-extinguish. The average afterglow may not exceed 20 seconds and the char length may not exceed 7 inches.

    Vertical Applications

Fabric used for vertical applications (draperies, upholstered panels) must pass a vertical test (701) of the National Fire Protection Association. The NFPA 701 test is performed in both large and small scale. The NFPA 701 Small Scale test is more stringent than the large scale test. Most finishers have equipment to run the small scale test rather than the large scale test. In the testing procedure, the fabric is hung vertically and exposed to a source of ignition for 12 seconds. When that source of ignition is removed, the fabric must self-extinguish in two seconds. The char length is measured and the fabric passes or fails based on how it withstands the test.

The standards for the Boston Fire Department, FAA 25.853 Aircraft, the State of New York, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 527 CMR 21.01 and the Board of Standards and Appeals of New York City are all based on the NFPA 701 Small Scale Test. They differ only in the procedure, specimen size and ignition source. Fabric is tested in the vertical plane allowing oxygen to pass along both sides, facilitating ignition and requiring substantial flame resistant properties to pass.

Duralee Pavilion | Indoor | Outdoor Fabric| Duralee Contract| Industry Specifications| All fabrics at Exceptional Pricing

Icon Written by Joni Fine on December 6, 2009 – 8:45 am

Source 4 Interiors carries the full line of CONTRACT Duralee.  Our designer pick this week is PAVILION which is an indoor/outdoor collection of fabrics.  You will have a large variety of patterns to choose from with a beautiful collection of colors.  Listed below is the Industry Specifications:

    Duralee Pavilion Information

Duralee Pavilion consists of three different types of indoor/outdoor product, Sunbrella®, Weatherwize® and Teflon®. Please follow these care instructions for the indicated finish.

    General Cleaning

It is important that fabrics are cleaned regularly. Most dirt and stains can be cleaned if they are promptly treated. The fabric can be machine washed at a low temperature (less than 100 degrees F) with lukewarm water using a mild soap.

Do not dry in electric or gas dryers and iron the fabric only at a low temperature. Excessive heat will shrink the fabric. Allow to air or line dry. Stain removal: Brush stain lightly, spot clean with warm water and a mild detergent, non-chlorinated bleach or diluted chlorinated bleach. An upholstery spot cleaner may also be effective. Blot the stain with a cloth or a sponge damp with the solution, turning continually so that only the clean part of sponge or cloth is in contact with the stain. NEVER RUB. Never try to remove a stain with household detergents. For large or serious stains, a professional upholstery cleaner is recommended.

    Sunbrella®

Sunbrella® is a solution dyed acrylic fabric that resists stains, water, and mildew; retains color and strength. During the winter season it should be cleaned, air dried, and stored in a dry well-ventilated area.

Most stains can be cleaned with a mild soap and water solution. Sunbrella® fabrics should be cleaned regularly before substances such as dirt, etc. are allowed to accumulate on and become embedded in the fabric. The fabric can be cleaned without being removed from the piece. Simply brush off any loose dirt, etc. then clean with water and a mild natural soap. (No more than 100 degrees F.) Rinse thoroughly to remove soap. When using liquid detergent, it may be necessary to re-apply a water repellant treatment, such as 303 Hi Tech Fabric Guard or a similar product.

Sunbrella® is made from 100% acrylic fiber and is heat sensitive. When washing or cleaning, DO NOT SUBJECT TO EXCESSIVE HEAT as the fabric will shrink. DO NOT STEAM PRESS OR DRY IN ELECTRIC OR GAS DRYERS. Allow fabric to air dry.
